Creating a Home-Centered Life: Insights from Lyndsey Mimnagh of Treehouse Schoolhouse

Join me as I chat with Lyndsey Mimnagh from Treehouse Schoolhouse about creating a home-centered life. In this delightful conversation, Lyndsey discuss her journey, home education, and balancing home-based businesses with homeschooling. We share practical tips on cultivating a family atmosphere that fosters creativity, learning, and hospitality. Tune in for inspiration and insights on how to make your home the heart of your family’s life.

What is a Home-Centered Life?

A home-centered life is about making your home a hub of activity, learning, and connection. It's about designing spaces and routines that support your family's unique values and needs. For Lyndsey, this concept means that all aspects of life—from education to work to play—revolve around the home. This intentional approach creates an atmosphere where children can thrive and families can connect deeply.

Lyndsey's Journey

Lyndsey and her family live in a beautifully designed home in the forests of North Carolina. Her husband, a cabinet builder, crafted their homeschool room, making it a functional and inspiring space. This room is strategically located near the kitchen and main living areas, emphasizing the seamless integration of learning into everyday life.

Practical Tips for Creating a Home-Centered Life

  1. Define Your Family’s Values: Start by identifying what’s most important to your family. Do you value creativity, hospitality, outdoor play, or reading? Once you have a clear vision, design your home and routines to reflect these priorities.
  2. Maximize Your Space Creatively: Whether you have a large home or a small apartment, you can create effective learning and play areas. Lyndsey suggests using multi-purpose furniture and outdoor spaces to encourage creativity and exploration.
  3. Set Boundaries and Delegate: Balancing work, homeschooling, and family life can be challenging. Lyndsay emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries and delegating tasks. Determine what only you can do and find ways to delegate or outsource the rest.
  4. Prioritize Margin and Play: Children need unstructured time to process what they learn and to engage in imaginative play. Make sure your schedule includes plenty of free time for your kids to explore and create.
  5. Self-Care is Essential: As homeschooling moms, it's crucial to take care of ourselves. Lyndsey highlights the importance of carving out time for self-care to ensure we can sustain our home-centered life and be present for our families.

Balancing Home-Based Businesses with Homeschooling

Both Lyndsey and I run home-based businesses, and we discussed the unique challenges and blessings this brings. One key takeaway is involving children in the business. Whether it's helping with small tasks or learning entrepreneurial skills, including kids in your work can be incredibly beneficial.

Final Thoughts

Creating a home-centered life is about more than just physical spaces—it's about fostering an atmosphere where your family can grow and thrive. By defining your values, maximizing your space, setting boundaries, prioritizing margin, and taking care of yourself, you can create a home that truly reflects your family's unique needs and aspirations.
